Trailer legs, commonly known as legs, are also known as "horse legs" by truck drivers in some regions. They can be divided into left and right or main and auxiliary parts. As an indispensable part of semi trailers, commonly used legs have a travel distance of 480cm, a closing height of about 90cm, a rated load of 28T, and a static load of 80T. Their function is to support the semi trailer after it detaches from the front of the vehicle.

Each semi trailer will be equipped with trailer legs, which can be either single acting or linked. When the tractor leaves, it is necessary to roll down the trailer legs to support the weight of a portion of the semi-trailer, so that the semi-trailer can balance the ground before and after. After the tractor is docked with the semi-trailer, the legs need to be shaken up. When driving, the trailer legs are about 30cm above the ground.

Single action Trailer leg

This type of trailer leg has a gearbox on both sides, divided into internal and external types. It can be independently lifted and lowered through two cranks, divided into high and low speed gears. Generally, both high and low speed gears can be used when unloaded, while low speed gears must be used when overloaded. This type of trailer leg is the most basic traditional one, with strong adaptability, and can be used on flat and uneven ground.

Linkage type Trailer leg

This type of trailer leg only has a gearbox for the main leg, which can be controlled to lift and lower the main and auxiliary legs simultaneously through a crank and a connecting rod connecting the main and auxiliary legs. It is also divided into two gears, high and low, and is an upgraded version of the most basic traditional trailer leg. Compared to the single acting trailer leg, the lifting efficiency is doubled. However, this type of trailer leg is only suitable for flat road surfaces, and it needs to be supported by cushion blocks to maintain the basic level of the support surface when used on uneven roads.

Precautions when operating the legs

3. Keep the two legs at the same height and evenly apply force.

4. When reversing and docking, the groove of the traction head saddle and the traction pin should always be in the same straight line.

5. When docking, the towing vehicle should slow down and immediately brake when the traction pin enters the saddle lock to prevent the force of the traction saddle hitting the traction pin from being converted into an impact force on the legs, causing damage to the legs.

6. Before separating the tractor from the semi-trailer, open the latch and shake the trailer legs to make the traction pin higher than the traction saddle and not more than 10MM, so as to separate the traction head from the semi-trailer.
