ISO TANK (International Standard Tank Container) is a special stainless steel pressure vessel fixed in a rigid outer frame, specially designed for the transportation of liquid, gas, and hazardous chemical cargoes. It integrates the safety of pressure tanks and the flexibility of standard containers, making it the most ideal equipment for global bulk liquid logistics.
What Is an ISO Tank Container?
An ISO tank is composed of two core parts: an inner liquid tank and an outer structural frame.
• Inner tank: Mostly made of 316 stainless steel; some use epoxy resin coating for anti-corrosion.
• Structure: Oval or approximate spherical, with double-layer insulation design.
• Equipped with: Top loading port, bottom unloading valve, safety pressure relief valve, inert gas protection system, and optional steam/electric heating device.
• Frame: High-strength steel structure, consistent with standard container dimensions, suitable for ship, truck, and rail transport.
ISO tanks are widely used for transporting:
• Food liquids: wine, milk, fruit juice, edible oil
• Industrial oils: fuel, lubricating oil
• Chemicals: general chemicals, hazardous liquids
• Liquefied gases & low-temperature products
IMO Classification of ISO Tank Containers
According to the IMDG Code (International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code) formulated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), ISO tank containers are divided into the following types to adapt to different cargo hazards:
1. IMO Type 0
• For non-dangerous goods
• Non-toxic, non-corrosive, flash point > 61°C
• Liquid food, neutral chemicals
• Bottom unloading
2. IMO Type 1
• For high-risk dangerous goods
• Max allowable working pressure ≥ 1.75 bar
• Flash point < 0°C chemicals, highly toxic, corrosive, self-igniting cargo
• Special steel or lined structure required
• Bottom or top unloading
3. IMO Type 2
• For medium-risk dangerous goods
• Working pressure: 1.0 – 1.75 bar
• Flash point 0°C – 61°C, toxic or corrosive chemicals
• Bottom unloading
4. IMO Type 4
• Road tank unit equipped with Type 1 / Type 2 tank
5. IMO Type 5
• For non-refrigerated liquefied gas
• Normal temperature chemical gases
• Bottom unloading
6. IMO Type 6
• Road tank unit equipped with Type 5 tank
7. IMO Type 7
• Insulated refrigerated liquefied gas tank
• For low-temperature liquefied gas, temperature-controlled perishable liquid
• Bottom unloading
8. IMO Type 8
• Road tank unit equipped with Type 7 tank
In addition, each tank corresponds to a Portable Tank Guideline (T1–T175), which specifies detailed technical parameters for different dangerous goods.
Core Advantages of ISO Tank Containers
1. Economical & Cost-effective
• A 20ft ISO tank (24,000L) can load 45% more than drums packed in a standard dry container.
• Lower unit freight cost: “More cargo, same freight”
• Save drum purchase, filling, and disposal costs
2. Fast & Efficient
• No need for drum washing, repeated loading/unloading
• Directly switch between sea, rail, and road transport
• Truly realize door-to-door global transport
3. Higher Safety
• Internationally recognized the safest way for liquid chemicals and food
• No spill, no leakage, no contamination
• Equipped with pressure relief, inert gas protection, and emergency cut-off system
4. Green & Environmentally Friendly
• Zero emission, zero dust, zero pollution
• Comply with EU, US, Japan mandatory environmental laws
• Some cargoes only allow tank transport, prohibiting drums
5. Neat & Professional Image
• Uniform appearance, standardized operation
• Improve customer trust and brand image
